Storms are life’s reminder that nothing is ever perfect, and that’s perfectly imperfect.

It was supposed to be a productive Monday. I had plans to run a few errands and then visit friends today upcountry, in an area of the island I visit often. Before setting out to get my morning coffee, I saw on the weather report that some rain was expected, but didn’t pay it too much attention since it’s “that” time of year, and usually no big deal.

Maui is usually sunny and warm, but the rain comes and goes and is of course needed! It is on days like today when my intuition guides me to turn around and get home safely and quickly that I am reminded of my bigger mission here. It turned out to be one of the worst rainy days on record that I’ve experienced on this island, with serious flooding, road closures & evacuations. It was a true test of my ability to stay calm amidst the chaos, especially when in contact with affected friends. Now that the worst of the storm has passed, and friends in the area are known to be safe, it led me to think just how imperfectly perfect everything actually is.

Life continues to unveil daily plot twists, requiring me (and all of us living in these Pandemic times) to consistently go with the flow. It’s impossible to go with the flow if you’re hell bent on doing things perfectly. And, yeah, that used to be me (and many I know). Having an entire year of what I’m now referring to as a “forced sabbatical” is a chance to keep the slower pace and flow of life as the default gear. It’s a chance to NOT return to the crazy busy fast-paced version of life as we knew it, the life we tried so very hard to make “perfect.”

What is “perfect” on a stormy rained out day is staying home with my three dogs, safely on the couch typing blog posts on my laptop. Juggling distance reiki/energy healing calls with researching trips for clients finally feeling it might be safe to take a vacation later this year. I’m just kidding. NOTHING is perfect. It’s still raining and those three angel dogs are really ready for a walk. They’d love it to stop raining (and secretly, so would I!). But, we are going with the flow and since it’s no longer coming down in buckets, we will go for a walk and we will get a little wet. My mom loved to say “it’s just a little water” when I’d complain about having to walk our childhood dog in the rain. Or better yet, “it could be snowing”.

So many imperfectly perfect reasons to appreciate life as it is today, and look forward to the post-storm rainbows. There are always beautiful rainbows after the rain, no matter how big the storm. Safe is better than perfect xo
